SENIOR ENGINEER (POWER SYSTEMS)
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Engineer (Power Systems) provides senior-level electrical engineering and technical leadership in the development and delivery of power systems for mining, heavy industrial and related projects.
Reporting to the Electrical Team Lead, the role is responsible for the engineering, analysis and technical execution of medium- and high-voltage power systems, including electrical distribution, substations, power generation, protection systems, grounding and associated electrical infrastructure. The Senior Engineer (Power Systems) applies sound professional judgment to develop practical, safe and code-compliant engineering solutions while supporting projects from early studies and project development through detailed engineering, construction and commissioning.
Working within multidisciplinary project teams, the Senior Engineer (Power Systems) provides technical direction and guidance to engineers, Engineers-in-Training, designers and other technical personnel. Depending on the assignment and the individual’s experience, responsibilities may range from leading defined electrical engineering scopes to providing discipline leadership and senior technical direction on major projects.
The position requires a high degree of professional independence and accountability and includes responsibility for the technical quality and completeness of assigned engineering work. The Senior Engineer (Power Systems) works closely with Project Managers, clients, vendors, contractors and other engineering disciplines to coordinate technical requirements and support successful project delivery.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and perform electrical engineering and design activities associated with medium- and high-voltage power systems, including distribution systems, substations, power generation and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Perform and review power system analyses and studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash and related electrical system evaluations.
- Develop and review electrical system designs, calculations, equipment specifications, technical reports, drawings and other engineering deliverables, including requirements associated with grounding and bonding, protection and control, equipment selection and system integration.
- Establish appropriate engineering approaches, design criteria and technical solutions for assigned projects and engineering scopes, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, client requirements and established engineering practices.
- Apply independent professional judgment in evaluating alternatives, resolving technical issues and developing practical, safe and constructible engineering solutions.
- Lead and coordinate electrical engineering activities within multidisciplinary project teams, including technical interfaces with other engineering disciplines, clients, vendors and contractors.
- Review engineering work and deliverables prepared by engineers, Engineers-in-Training, designers and other technical personnel, as appropriate to the assignment and level of responsibility.
- Provide technical direction, mentorship and development support to engineering and design personnel and contribute to the development of electrical engineering capability within the organization.
- Participate in project planning, scope development, engineering estimates, schedules, proposals and technical execution strategies, including identification of technical risks and opportunities that may affect project safety, quality, cost, schedule, constructability or operation.
- Work directly with clients to understand operating requirements, define technical needs, present engineering recommendations and support technical decision-making and successful project delivery.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, vendors and contractors regarding equipment selection, technical requirements, system interfaces, procurement and project execution.
- Perform or lead site investigations, condition assessments, technical audits and field reviews, and provide engineering support during construction, installation, system energization, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of electrical engineering standards, procedures, tools and design practices, while maintaining awareness of developments in power-system technologies, equipment, codes, standards and industry practices.
- Support client relationships and business development through successful project execution, technical expertise, proposal development and identification of opportunities for additional engineering services.
- Participate in technical presentations, client meetings, project reviews and, where appropriate, professional and industry activities that support Nordmin’s technical capabilities and reputation.
- Assume professional responsibility for engineering work performed and for engineering deliverables for which the individual has been assigned professional responsibility, in accordance with applicable professional requirements and Nordmin procedures, including signing and sealing engineering deliverables and acting as Engineer of Record for assigned scopes where required and appropriate to the individual’s professional registration, experience and assigned responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Science or an equivalent accredited engineering program.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, or licensed in another Canadian jurisdiction with the ability to obtain registration in Ontario.
- Professional registration or eligibility for registration in other Canadian or United States jurisdictions is considered an asset.
- Significant progressive electrical engineering experience, including experience performing engineering work as a licensed Professional Engineer.
- Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage and high-voltage power systems in mining, heavy industrial, power generation or similar operating environments.
- Experience with electrical distribution systems, substations, protection systems, grounding and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Experience performing and reviewing power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination and arc-flash analysis.
- Strong knowledge and practical application of applicable electrical codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to independently execute complex engineering assignments, develop practical engineering solutions and exercise sound professional engineering judgment.
- Experience leading engineering activities, coordinating technical scopes and providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineering and design personnel.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating technical requirements with clients, vendors, contractors and other engineering disciplines.
- Experience supporting engineering projects through studies, design, procurement, construction and commissioning is considered an asset.
- Experience preparing engineering scopes, estimates, proposals and technical reports is considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate complex technical matters effectively with clients, project teams and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrated professionalism, technical leadership, accountability and commitment to engineering quality, mentorship and continuous improvement.

SALARY RANGE
$134,500 TO $176,000 plus 8% Employer matched RRSP contributions.
HOURS OF WORK
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, reasonable schedule flexibility available.
LOCATION
Thunder Bay Office, with possible, occasional travel.
