From our offices in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, Ontario, and Salt Lake City, Utah, our multidisciplinary teams support clients and projects across Canada, in the Americas and other international locations.

Nordmin provides practical engineering solutions across all stages of project development, from early studies and project planning through detailed engineering, procurement, construction support and project execution. Our work ranges from focused engineering assignments to large, multidisciplinary mining projects, often requiring our teams to work across different jurisdictions, operating environments and client organizations.

As a consulting engineering company, our success is built on the knowledge and experience of our people, our ability to respond to our clients’ needs, and our commitment to delivering practical, effective solutions safely, on schedule and within budget. Our diverse project portfolio provides opportunities for our employees to develop their technical and project delivery experience while working with clients and project teams in Canada and around the world.

As we continue to grow and develop our Civil/Structural team, Nordmin Engineering Ltd. is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the following position:

DESIGNER – CIVIL/STRUCTURAL

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Department Lead, the Civil/Structural Designer is a technical design professional who works with engineers, other designers and multidisciplinary project teams in the development and delivery of civil, structural and architectural designs for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects. The Designer develops and integrates project designs into coordinated three-dimensional models, drawings, layouts, details and other design deliverables.

Working with engineers and other project personnel as required, the Designer develops practical design solutions based on project requirements, engineering criteria, equipment information, multidisciplinary inputs, applicable codes and standards, and site conditions. Engineers provide engineering input where required, including engineering analysis, component selection, member sizing and other matters requiring professional engineering judgment. The

Designer is responsible for integrating these requirements into the overall design and developing the associated models, drawings and project sheets.

As experience and capability are demonstrated, Designers assume increasing responsibility for independently developing design solutions, coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces, resolving design and constructability issues, checking and reviewing design work, and providing technical guidance to less experienced design personnel. Professional engineering responsibility and sealing of engineering documents remain with the responsible professional engineer.

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop civil, structural and architectural designs for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects using engineering, equipment, site and multidisciplinary information.
  • Develop and maintain three-dimensional project models using Autodesk Revit and produce coordinated drawings, sheets, plans, sections, elevations and details from the project model.
  • Prepare and modify two-dimensional drawings and design information using AutoCAD and other applicable Autodesk software.
  • Interpret and incorporate engineering calculations, design criteria, specifications, sketches, vendor information, field information and other project inputs into coordinated designs.
  • Coordinate designs with mechanical, electrical, piping and other disciplines to identify and resolve spatial, interface, access and constructability issues.
  • Develop complete and coordinated drawing packages that effectively communicate the design for engineering, procurement and construction purposes.
  • Consider applicable codes, standards and jurisdictional requirements and work in SI or Imperial units as required by the project.
  • Participate in design and model reviews, identify incomplete or conflicting information, and obtain engineering or technical input where required.
  • Perform checking and review of drawings, models and other design deliverables appropriate to experience and assigned responsibility.
  • Support field investigations and verification of existing conditions and incorporate verified information into project models and drawings.
  • Assume increasing responsibility for complex design assignments, multidisciplinary coordination and providing guidance to less experienced design personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary education in civil engineering technician/technology, architectural technician/technology, engineering design and drafting, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent relevant education, training and design experience may be considered.
  • Previous civil, structural, architectural, industrial or mining design experience is considered an asset, with the level of experience required dependent upon the level of the position.
  • Registration as, or willingness to work toward designation as, a C.Tech. or C.E.T. in Ontario, or an equivalent designation in another jurisdiction, is considered an asset.
  • Experience with, or the ability to develop proficiency in, Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD, including three-dimensional modelling and production of project drawings and sheets.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Teams, with familiarity with Microsoft Project considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to research and apply, applicable building codes, standards and jurisdictional requirements. Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively in both SI and Imperial units.
  • Strong spatial awareness, technical aptitude and problem-solving ability, with the ability to interpret engineering and project information and develop coordinated design solutions.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to work independently within assigned design responsibilities while recognizing matters requiring engineering input, review or professional approval.
