SENIOR DESIGNER – CIVIL/STRUCTURAL
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Department Lead, the Senior Civil/Structural Designer is an experienced technical design professional who works with civil and structural engineers, other designers and multidisciplinary project teams in the development and delivery of civil and structural designs for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects. The Senior Designer develops practical design solutions and provides technical leadership in the preparation, coordination and review of drawings, layouts, models, schedules, material lists and other project deliverables.
Working with engineers and other project personnel as required, the Senior Designer develops civil and structural designs based on project requirements, engineering criteria, equipment information, multidisciplinary inputs, applicable codes and standards, and site conditions. Engineers provide input on structural systems, design loads, member and foundation sizing, design criteria and other matters requiring professional engineering judgment. The Senior Designer integrates these requirements into the design and coordinates the associated deliverables with minimal day-to-day engineering direction.
The Senior Designer takes responsibility for the technical execution, quality, completeness, coordination, organization and professional presentation of assigned design packages. The role includes guiding and mentoring designers and drafting personnel, reviewing their work, resolving multidisciplinary interfaces and applying practical experience to ensure designs are constructible, functional, accessible and maintainable.
As experience and capability are demonstrated, responsibilities extend from leading defined design packages to coordinating multiple packages, major project scopes and complex design activities across multiple projects. Engineering judgment, code interpretation, final engineering approval and the signing and sealing of engineering documents remain with the responsible professional engineer.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop civil and structural designs for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects using engineering direction, project requirements, equipment information and verified site conditions.
- Develop structural arrangements, foundations, concrete and reinforcing details, structural steel layouts, platforms, stairs and access systems, together with site layouts, grading, drainage, earthworks and site servicing information as applicable to the assignment.
- Interpret and incorporate engineering calculations, design criteria, specifications, surveys, geotechnical information, vendor drawings and field information into practical, constructible and maintainable designs.
- Use Revit, AutoCAD and other applicable design software to prepare and coordinate drawings, three dimensional models, schedules, material lists and quantities for engineering, procurement and construction.
- Lead assigned design activities and coordinate designers, drafters, engineers, vendors, contractors and other disciplines to resolve spatial, access, equipment foundation, structural support and installation interfaces.
- Identify incomplete or conflicting information, evaluate complex design and coordination issues, recommend practical solutions and obtain engineering input where required.
- Review and maintain assigned models, drawing packages and related deliverables for technical quality, accuracy, completeness, organization, consistency and professional presentation, ensuring they clearly communicate design intent.
- Lead or participate in design and model reviews, coordinate the resolution of comments and ensure required changes are incorporated into affected deliverables.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers and drafting personnel, recommend improvements to design methods and workflows, and promote consistent application of Nordmin and project standards.
- Support engineers and project managers in planning design activities, coordinating work assignments and identifying matters affecting quality, scope, schedule or budget.
- Represent Nordmin during client meetings, field investigations and construction activities; verify existing conditions and provide technical coordination during construction, installation and commissioning, obtaining engineering review of proposed field resolutions where required.
- Support client relationships and business development through effective project delivery, identification of client needs and contributions to proposals and scope development.
- Consider applicable codes, standards and jurisdictional requirements, referring matters of interpretation and engineering compliance to the responsible engineer.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of a recognized architectural, civil or structural engineering technician or technologist program, or a related program, and holds a C.Tech. or C.E.T. designation in Ontario or an equivalent recognized designation in another jurisdiction.
- Substantial progressive architectural and/or civil and/or structural design experience, including independently developing complex designs and leading complete design packages with minimal day-to-day engineering direction. Experience in mining, industrial or infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple design activities and multidisciplinary interfaces, review deliverables and provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers and drafting personnel.
- Advanced proficiency in applicable civil or structural design software, including three dimensional modelling and multidisciplinary model coordination. Experience with Autodesk Revit and other discipline-specific modelling software is considered an asset.
- Strong practical knowledge of structural steel, reinforced concrete, foundations, access structures and related construction and detailing practices. Knowledge of site grading, drainage, earthworks and site servicing is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards and jurisdictional requirements, with sound judgment in recognizing matters requiring professional engineering interpretation, review or approval.
- Ability to interpret engineering criteria, calculations, vendor documentation, surveys, geotechnical information and field conditions and translate them into practical, coordinated design solutions.
- Practical field experience in construction support, fabrication, installation or commissioning, with the ability to apply that experience to improve constructability, accessibility and maintainability.
- Strong spatial awareness, technical aptitude, organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to work effectively in both SI and Imperial units.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development in design practices, technical knowledge and software capabilities.
