ASSOCIATE PROJECT MANAGER

JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Project Manager is a developing project management professional who works under the direction of a Project Manager or Director of Projects and assumes responsibility and accountability for the planning, coordination, execution and delivery of assigned project activities, work packages or project phases.

Reporting to the Director of Project Services, the position is intended for individuals who demonstrate strong organizational ability, initiative, communication skills, sound judgment and the ability to assume responsibility for project outcomes. Previous project management experience is an asset but is not required, as practical project management skills and Nordmin’s project delivery practices can be developed through training, mentorship and progressively responsible project assignments.

Working within delegated authority, the Associate Project Manager is responsible for driving assigned project work forward, coordinating project participants and interacting directly with clients, engineering disciplines, vendors, contractors and other stakeholders as required for project execution. The Associate Project Manager may assign appropriate project administration and coordination responsibilities to Project Coordinators and other project support personnel while retaining accountability for the execution and outcome of the assigned work.

As experience and capability are demonstrated, the Associate Project Manager assumes increasing responsibility for project execution. This may progress from responsibility for assigned project activities to leading work packages or project phases and, with sufficient experience, acting on behalf of the Project Manager within specifically delegated authority.

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Project Manager to plan, organize, execute and monitor assigned project activities, work packages and project phases, assuming accountability for assigned project responsibilities and outcomes.
  • Manage and monitor assigned elements of project scope, schedules, budgets, forecasts, resources, risks, changes, action items and progress, and take appropriate action within delegated authority to maintain project objectives.
  • Coordinate and drive multidisciplinary project activities across engineering, procurement, project services and other project functions to ensure deliverables, decisions and commitments are completed in accordance with project requirements.
  • Interact directly with clients, engineering disciplines, vendors, contractors and other stakeholders on project execution matters and represent project management within delegated authority.
  • Participate in and, where appropriate, lead project meetings, establish actions and commitments, resolve project issues within delegated authority and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Monitor project performance, identify emerging scope, schedule, cost, resource, technical, commercial or execution issues, implement appropriate corrective actions within delegated authority and escalate matters requiring higher-level decisions.
  • Assign appropriate project administration, coordination, documentation, reporting and follow-up responsibilities to Project Coordinators and other project support personnel, while retaining accountability for assigned project execution and outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and other project stakeholders and support the Project Manager in maintaining client satisfaction and responding to client requirements.
  • Assume increasing responsibility for project execution, including leading assigned activities, work packages or project phases and acting on behalf of the Project Manager on specifically delegated project matters.
  • Assist with other project management and project execution activities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced college diploma in engineering, engineering technology, construction management, project management, business or another relevant technical or project-delivery field.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Previous project management, engineering, construction, project coordination or other relevant project-delivery experience is an asset but is not required.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated initiative, accountability and ability to assume responsibility for assigned project outcomes.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, follow through on commitments, solve problems and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to coordinate and provide direction to multidisciplinary project teams and project support personnel within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients, engineering disciplines, vendors, contractors and other internal and external project stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify project issues, evaluate alternatives, initiate appropriate action within delegated authority and recognize when matters require escalation.
  • Developing knowledge of project scope, schedule, cost, resource, risk, change and project-performance management principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and effectively use project planning, project-control and project-management systems.
