INTERMEDIATE ENGINEER (CIVIL/STRUCTURAL)
JOB SUMMARY
The Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer is an experienced engineering professional who independently performs and coordinates civil and structural engineering activities for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects. The Engineer assumes responsibility for assigned engineering deliverables and scopes of work and works with designers, engineers and multidisciplinary project teams to develop practical and effective engineering solutions.
Reporting to the Civil/Structural Team Lead, the Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer performs engineering analysis and design, establishes design criteria and structural loading requirements, and designs buildings, structural steel systems, reinforced concrete structures, foundations, equipment foundations and other structures associated with mining and industrial facilities. The Engineer identifies and applies applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements and works closely with Civil/Structural Designers to develop coordinated and constructable project designs.
As experience and capability are demonstrated, the Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer assumes increasing responsibility for complex engineering assignments and defined work packages and scopes, including coordinating engineering activities, reviewing assigned engineering and design work, providing guidance to less experienced project personnel, and interacting directly with clients, vendors, contractors and other project stakeholders.
The Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer is accountable for the technical quality and completion of assigned engineering work and exercises professional engineering judgment within their area of competence and assigned responsibility.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform civil and structural engineering analysis and design for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects, including buildings, structural steel systems, reinforced concrete structures, foundations, equipment foundations and other civil/structural systems.
- Establish design criteria, structural loads and load combinations, including equipment, operating, maintenance, snow, wind, seismic and other applicable loading conditions.
- Perform structural analysis using S-FRAME or similar structural analysis software and evaluate and interpret structural analysis models and results.
- Identify, interpret and apply applicable building codes, structural design standards, regulations and jurisdiction-specific requirements.
- Provide Civil/Structural Designers with engineering criteria, calculations, member sizes, component selections and other technical information required to develop coordinated project models and drawings.
- Navigate and review three-dimensional project models using Autodesk Revit and Navisworks and review civil/structural models and drawings for engineering requirements, multidisciplinary interfaces and constructability.
- Coordinate civil/structural engineering activities and interfaces with mechanical, electrical, piping, mining and other disciplines and resolve engineering and design issues within assigned responsibility.
- Prepare, review and approve engineering documents and, where authorized and within their area of professional responsibility, sign and seal engineering documents.
- Communicate and coordinate with clients, vendors, contractors and other project stakeholders and support procurement, construction, field investigations and resolution of technical issues.
- Assume responsibility for the planning, coordination and technical delivery of assigned civil/structural engineering work packages and scopes, including review of assigned work and guidance to EITs and design personnel.
- Prepare, review, approve and, where appropriate to professional registration and assigned responsibility, sign and seal engineering documents.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related engineering program from a recognized university.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario, or eligible for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). Professional registration in other jurisdictions may be required depending on project assignments.
- Relevant civil/structural engineering experience in mining, industrial, infrastructure or other heavy industrial environments, with demonstrated ability to independently perform engineering analysis and design.
- Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles and experience in the analysis and design of buildings, structural steel, reinforced concrete, foundations and other industrial structures.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable building codes, structural design standards and regulatory requirements, including the determination and application of structural loads and load combinations.
- Experience with S-FRAME or similar structural analysis software, with the ability to develop, evaluate and interpret structural analysis models and results.
- Ability to navigate and review three-dimensional project models using Autodesk Revit and Navisworks and work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong professional judgment, analytical, problem-solving, communication and organizational skills, with the ability to independently resolve engineering issues within assigned responsibility and recognize when additional technical expertise is required.
- Ability to work effectively in both SI and Imperial units and proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Teams, with familiarity with Microsoft Project considered an asset.

SALARY RANGE
$98,500 TO $113,900 plus 7% Employer matched RRSP contributions.
HOURS OF WORK
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, reasonable schedule flexibility available.
LOCATION
Thunder Bay Office, with possible, occasional travel.
