INTERMEDIATE ENGINEER (POWER SYSTEMS)
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Electrical Team Lead, the Intermediate Engineer (Power Systems) provides professional electrical engineering services in the development and delivery of power systems for mining, heavy industrial and related projects.
The role is responsible for the engineering, analysis and execution of medium-voltage and high-voltage power systems, including electrical distribution, substations, power generation, protection systems, grounding and associated electrical infrastructure. The Intermediate Engineer (Power Systems) applies professional engineering judgment to develop practical, safe and code-compliant engineering solutions while supporting projects from early studies and project development through detailed engineering, construction and commissioning.
Working within multidisciplinary project teams, the Intermediate Engineer (Power Systems) independently performs engineering assignments and may coordinate electrical engineering activities, work packages and defined engineering scopes. Depending on the assignment and the individual’s experience, responsibilities may range from independently completing complex engineering activities to leading defined electrical engineering scopes or major scopes under the overall direction of project and senior technical personnel.
The position requires professional independence and accountability for assigned engineering work. The Intermediate Engineer (Power Systems) works closely with Project Managers, senior technical personnel, clients, vendors, contractors and other engineering disciplines to coordinate technical requirements and support successful project delivery.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform and coordinate electrical engineering and design activities associated with medium- and high-voltage power systems, including distribution systems, substations, power generation and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Perform and review power system analyses and studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash and related electrical system evaluations.
- Develop and review electrical system designs, calculations, equipment specifications, technical reports, drawings and other engineering deliverables, including requirements associated with grounding and bonding, protection and control, equipment selection and system integration.
- Develop engineering approaches, design criteria and technical solutions for assigned engineering activities and scopes, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, client requirements and established engineering practices.
- Apply independent professional judgment in evaluating alternatives, resolving technical issues and developing practical, safe and constructible engineering solutions.
- Coordinate assigned electrical engineering activities, work packages and scopes within multidisciplinary project teams, including technical interfaces with other engineering disciplines, clients, vendors and contractors.
- Review engineering work and deliverables prepared by Engineers-in-Training, designers and other technical personnel as appropriate to the assignment and assigned level of responsibility.
- Provide technical guidance to Engineers-in-Training, designers and other technical personnel working on assigned engineering activities and scopes.
- Participate in project planning, scope development, engineering estimates, schedules, proposals and technical execution planning, including identification of technical issues and risks that may affect project safety, quality, cost, schedule, constructability or operation.
- Work with clients to understand operating requirements, define technical needs, develop engineering recommendations and support technical decision-making and project delivery.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, vendors and contractors regarding equipment selection, technical requirements, system interfaces, procurement and project execution.
- Perform site investigations, condition assessments, technical audits and field reviews, and provide engineering support during construction, installation, system energization, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of electrical engineering standards, procedures, tools and design practices while maintaining awareness of developments in power-system technologies, equipment, codes, standards and industry practices.
- Support client relationships and business development through successful project execution, technical contributions, proposal development and identification of opportunities for additional engineering services.
- Assume professional responsibility for engineering work performed and for engineering deliverables for which the individual has been assigned professional responsibility, in accordance with applicable professional requirements and Nordmin procedures, including signing and sealing engineering deliverables for assigned scopes where required and appropriate to the individual’s professional registration, experience and assigned responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Science or an equivalent accredited engineering program.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, or licensed in another Canadian jurisdiction with the ability to obtain registration in Ontario.
- Professional registration or eligibility for registration in other Canadian or United States jurisdictions is considered an asset.
- Progressive electrical engineering experience, including experience performing engineering work as a licensed Professional Engineer.
- Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage and high-voltage power systems in mining, heavy industrial, power generation or similar operating environments.
- Experience with electrical distribution systems, substations, protection systems, grounding and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Experience performing power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination and arc-flash analysis.
- Knowledge and practical application of applicable electrical codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to independently execute engineering assignments, develop practical engineering solutions and exercise sound professional engineering judgment.
- Experience coordinating engineering activities, work packages or defined technical scopes.
- Experience providing technical guidance to Engineers-in-Training, designers and other technical personnel.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating technical requirements with clients, vendors, contractors and other engineering disciplines.
- Experience supporting engineering projects through studies, design, procurement, construction and commissioning is considered an asset.
- Experience preparing engineering scopes, estimates, proposals and technical reports is considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate technical matters effectively with clients, project teams and other stakeholders.

SALARY RANGE
$98,500 TO $113,900 plus 7% Employer Matched RRSP
HOURS OF WORK
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, reasonable schedule flexibility available.
LOCATION
Thunder Bay Office, with possible, occasional travel.
